Four short, plain-language explainers on the science and process behind Balbriggan's changing beach — written so a neighbour with no background in coastal science can follow the real debate, not just our conclusions.

01 · Foundations

How sand dunes form

Dunes start with an obstacle. Wind carries loose, dry sand across the beach; anything that breaks the wind - driftwood, shells, a clump of grass - slows it down enough for grains to drop and pile up.

Once a small mound forms, pioneer plants like sea rocket and lyme grass take root in it. Their roots bind the loose sand, and their stems trap more blowing sand as it passes, the mound grows into an embryo dune, then a taller, more stable fore dune. It's a slow feedback loop: a bit of shelter lets plants grow, and the plants create more shelter.

02 · Species

Lyme grass vs. marram grass

Both are dune-building grasses, but they're not interchangeable. Marram grass - the more common choice on Irish and British dunes - has fine, flexible blades and an extensive, deep root network that's very effective at binding sand while staying relatively gentle to walk near.

Lyme grass spreads faster and tolerates salt spray well, which is likely why it was chosen here, but its blades are stiffer and sharper-tipped, and its roots spread more shallowly and aggressively, which is part of why it's colonised such a wide strip of the beach. The trade-off is real: faster stabilisation, at the cost of a coastline that's less comfortable, and less open, for the people who use it.

03 · Process

Why erosion isn't automatically a crisis

Beaches move. Sand is carried away by winter storms and largely returns over calmer summer months - a normal seasonal cycle of erosion and accretion that's been happening at Balbriggan for as long as anyone can remember, with no lasting damage to the coastline.

A crisis looks different: sand loss that doesn't recover between seasons, a trend that keeps heading in one direction over years, and a clear risk to structures or safety. Treating ordinary, cyclical movement as an emergency is how you end up with permanent interventions - like a wide new dune system - for a problem that may have mostly resolved itself.

04 · Process

What good community engagement looks like

Engagement sits on a ladder. At the bottom rungs, a council simply informs residents after a decision is made, or consults them lightly once plans are largely fixed. Higher up, residents are involved while options are still open, collaborate on shaping the actual proposal, and - at the top - hold real influence over the final decision.

Good coastal management doesn't need every decision to sit at the top rung, but it does need to be honest about where on the ladder residents actually stand, and to move up it for decisions, like this one, that permanently change a shared public space. That's the standard we're asking Fingal County Council to meet.
